Strategic Planning, going Beyond Fake News, and Happy Trails
After nearly 30 years at the library, Susan Bacina will retire on December 1, 2017. She has worked in multiple areas of RAS (serials, monographs, and ILL) and has supported the library through her tireless work as Library Staff Association treasurer, attending OLA Support Staff Division conferences and acting as SSD Chair in 2010. Please stop by to thank Susan for her continuous dedication and wish her Happy Trails!

The Strategic Planning group met again for 2.5 hours last Monday. In this meeting, we talked about how to integrate the data that we have already gathered to inform this process, and how we should make sure that we are using data -- from both inside and outside the library -- to answer questions and check our assumptions moving forward.
We also started to think about content of the plan, brainstorming ideas for potential goals or ambitions and looking at the existing plan to see what we want to build on. This raised an interesting question: How do we define goals for ourselves to address big problems that are not going to be solved over the course of our plan? We talked about how this might point to the need for a strategic plan that focuses on our ambitions, and how to think about those ambitions in a way that allows us to see and feel that we are making progress along the way.
In the next two weeks one small group will work on synthesizing the themes and goals we identified in our brainstorm. Another small group is going to look at strategic goals, visions and projects from all OSULP departments to see if any consistent themes or ideas emerge.

We have been working on re-launching the TREC meetings under a slightly different banner. Instead of rotating between departments and units, we are going to schedule topical meetings. It will be on us to work with all of you to develop meetings around shared issues, problems and opportunities. And while we will be sure to invite those most closely affected by the topics under discussion, all of these meetings will always be open to anyone interested. The first one will be next week (Thursday the 19th) and will take up the question of liaison work -- we will be looking at how we define the liaison role, figuring out when it is appropriate to share and collaborate on this work, and think about how we'll capture and report on what we're doing.
