New projects, construction, and cleaning at the Valley Library.

NEWS

The construction area on the west side of the Valley Library's 5th floor. Patrick Layton hands a student employee some shelving.

A project to remove the 5 ranges of empty shelving on the west side of the 5th floor is underway.  Our expected timeline is as follows:

  • 6/23: begin creating a staging space by moving tables and cubicles on the west side of the 5th floor
  • 6/24-6/30: begin removing the shelving and stacking it in the staging area.  CM staff will be point on this.  We will have caution tape up along the staging area and the Construction Benny up in that area.  We will keep an emergency egress path open, and the remaining stacks will be open for use.
  • After 6/30: the area that held the shelving will be cordoned off with caution tape until facilities removes the bolts in the floor (the request for this has already been placed), and surplus will come pick up the shelving stacked in the staging area.

If you have questions/concerns about this project, please let Kerri, Meggie, Patrick, or Victoria know.  They all are working together on this project.

Remember that the deadline for signing up to attend, bring food or games, and volunteer for the picnic is June 30th.

The Library Staff Association hopes you can join us Wednesday July 12 from 11:30-1:30.

TAKE NOTE

Latest Impact Report for the Libraries and Press is now available online

The Libraries and Press do amazing work, and an Impact Report is compiled each year that concisely and elegantly describes the work that we do and how many students are impacted by the resources and services of the Libraries and Press. This publication exists electronically and is intended for external audiences such as major donors.

In addition to scintillating facts and figures (like, how many people study and do research at the Valley Library in a year? Answer: 1.25 million) and an overview of some of the many accomplishments of Libraries and Press faculty and staff, there’s also a few pretty cool quotes. Here’s one:

“Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life. Libraries change lives for the better.”  — Sidney Sheldon

The Impact Report was written and produced by Daniel Moret with layout by Graphic Design Intern Sydney Wisner.

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS

Fiscal year end close is upon us.  Please ensure that purchases are made prior to these deadlines.  Obviously, emergency/rush exceptions can be made, but we’d like to limit those since that expense will be added to the new FY and require extra work for staff to do reconciliation.

  • June 26th – The P-Card module stops loading new transactions.  Transactions after this date will be in the next FY.
  • June 29th – Any payroll changes requiring labor distribution need to be in to UABC by noon.
  • June 30th – All PCard logs, statements, and receipts are due to UABC.

SCARC Student assistant Gillian Bergmann completed her second OHBA blog post on women in the brewing industry. Gillian was one of SCARC's UHC student archivists this past academic year.

Summit requests and some ILL book requests placed from June 24th through July 4th will be delayed in getting to the customer due to a change in courier service.  Remind customers to request early, and if that doesn’t work to place their request through ILL with a note that they need the item before July 7th.  ILL will do their best to accommodate, but as per usual there is never a guaranteed delivery time.  Not only do we get a new service that offers faster delivery and tracking, we also get a new delivery/pick-up time of 10:30-11:30AM.  Guin and Cascades are also working out their services with this change.  Thanks to the great minds in ILL/Summit/CM, that group generated a new game plan for our day.

It’s cleaning time at the Valley Library.  If you see students cleaning in the Valley Library, it’s because there’s an annual push to clean up the library during the summer.  Students are integral in making the Valley Library a wonderful place to study.

Quote of the Week

“A great library provides. It is enmeshed in the life of a community in a way that makes it indispensable. A great library is one nobody notices because it is always there, and always has what people need.”
