How Do I Register for Interlibrary Loan Service?

This service helps you access materials that OSU does not own. Items can be borrowed from other institutions in the U.S. as well as from international lenders. However, everyone who wishes to use the ILL service must first register to use it.

  • OSU faculty, staff and students (including courtesy faculty & CIMRS) must have an ONID account before registering for ILL service. For help, phone OSU Computer Helpdesk at (541) 737-8787 or email them at

Please ask the Guin Library staff for help with this if you are having any trouble; the process can be a bit frustrating.

Once you have your ONID account and know your ONID username and password, you are ready to register for Interlibrary Loan service. Simply fill out and submit the electronic form.

  • Non-OSU people associated with HMSC do not need to have an ONID account to register for ILL service. They may simply register by filling out this form and submitting it.

Everyone who registers for Interlibrary Loan service will receive an email message confirming successful registration. Please be sure to write down your new ILL username and password; you'll need to use them each time you place a request.

How Do I Request Items via Interlibrary Loan Service?

Once you have received confirmation that you are registered for this service, you can begin requesting materials. When you want to get an item that is not owned by any of the OSU Libraries, request it through Interlibrary Loan Service.

  1. Type in your ONID user name and password.
  2. Click on the Login button.
  3. Select the type of material you are requesting.
  4. Fill out the form as completely as you can. Note required fields.
  5. Click on the Submit button.
  6. Click on the Logoff button when done.

How Do I Renew Interlibrary Loans (items borrowed from other institutions)?

  1. Login to your ILL account.
  2. Click "Checked Out Items/Renew".
  3. Locate the item you want to renew in the Checked Out Items table and click on the Transaction Number.
  4. Click the "Renew Request" link above Transaction Information.
  5. Read the "Status" line at the top of the page to confirm that your renewal request was sent to the lender.
  6. The lender needs time to respond to your renewal request, so check your record again in a day or two to find out if your item has been renewed and to see the new due date.

What Do I Need to Know About Copyright?

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. For more information on copyright issues at OSU, please visit the OSU Libraries copyright guide.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

If I Am Unable to Borrow a Dissertation, How Can I Get It?

Remember that, like Oregon State University, many university libraries are putting current theses and dissertations into digital repositories. Many recent works are available on the Internet. Also, if the subject of a dissertation fits into the Guin Library collection, we may be able to purchase it for you. Please check with library staff. We can purchase dissertations (not Master's theses) and receive them in 2-3 days.

How Can I Pick Up ILL Materials?

Most of the time, you don't have to pick up ILL materials. Loans are usually delivered to your HMSC mailbox or agency mail container. If you don't have a mailbox, they will be held for you in the wire basket in the staff office. We will notify you that they have arrived.

Articles are posted to your ILL record. When your article arrives, you will receive an email with directions on how to retrieve it. Articles remain accessible to you for 21 days from the date of the email notification, and then are automatically deleted. You may remove articles earlier by using the delete button.
