The library in the news, a Try-Atholon, and more.

OSU Libraries and Press appeared in the Democrat-Herald today in a story talking about finals week here at OSU.  The common consensus is that people want to study here, but we’re often so full that people have a hard time finding a table. Students studying in the Library rotunda.

Fearless leader Emma helped coordinate library participation in the Try-Atholon of Fac-Staff fitness event today (photo attached!) – we didn’t win this year but we had fun!

This Friday evening SCARC is hosting a reception for commencement speaker Husnu Ozyegin and some of his OSU classmates from the Class of 1967.

Sustainability volunteer opportunities abound in June during the Great Move Out events on and off campus! Last year the Res Hall Move Out Donation Drive diverted 23,000 pounds of material from landfills and donated to non-profits during move out. This year, for the first time, OSU will work both on-campus and in the Corvallis community to divert even more materials! Check out the Great Move-Out webpage for on-campus and off-campus volunteer details and available  shifts.

Branding Tips from Daniel Moret

Last week, we looked at the university’s official and alternative fonts, and for most university faculty and staff, the alternative fonts will be sufficient. Also, the university has to pay to license the new official fonts to cover the number of users, so the alternative (and free) fonts are fine to use unless you’re producing marketing materials. Here are those substitute fonts that are standard on computers:

Verdana is the substitute for Kievit Pro.

Georgia is the substitute for Rufina Stencil.

Impact is the substitute for Stratum 2.

Today we’ll look at the university’s official colors.

Here’s some excerpts from the new Brand Guide:

Aside from our logo, Beaver Orange is the most identifiable element of our university.

Primary Colors

Beaver Orange, Paddletail Black, and Bucktooth White

Secondary Colors

Although our color system relies heavily on Beaver Orange, black and white, we understand the need to complement that palette with a robust set of additional colors. To meet that need, we’ve developed a full set of colors to help tailor our pieces to a variety of audiences and messages.

Under no circumstances should any of them become the predominant color for a school, department, institute or center.

On June 15th at 2pm EDT / 11am PDT, SPARC will host the first in a series of webcasts supporting professional development for librarians working to advance openness in research and education on their campuses. The June webcast, “Scrappy Strategies: Advancing Open on Campus with Limited Resources,” will focus on identifying actions with the highest return on investment for advancing Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data / Data Management on campus. Presentations by Anita Walz (Virginia Tech), Brianna Marshall (University of California, Riverside), and Micah Vandegrift (Florida State) will equip participants with strategies and suggestions for maximizing the impact of the time they devote to advancing open issues—even if time and supporting resources are limited. Registration for this professional development webcast series is open to all librarians. You can register for the June 15th webcast here and sign up for updates on future professional development webcasts in this series here.
